Blog?

Inspired by Greg Mankiw's highly-frequented blog on economics, Neil came to me with a proposal to start a blog of our own with Eric, discussing whatever silly or inspiring ideas that happen to strike us. So, here is is: The Profit of Doom. Enjoy.

Wow. Uh, I haven't been here in a hella long time, and I don't recognize some of these features. Who still uses this? I started writing on LJ again recently, probably just to tide myself over until I can make my own website or something.

In any case, I am (as usual) procrastinating -- in this case, a take-home marketing final was given to me Friday, to be turned in by 9:00 am Monday (today now), and I've just about started it. I had a great weekend, though. Maybe I'll talk about it on LJ while putting off the final even more. Or maybe I'll stop being dumb and start working.

I love lightning storms!

Ever since college, I always wonder what SoCal people would say whenever I come across an interesting bit of weather. Like right now, with lightning striking pretty much every second. If I had a good camera...

Work has been alright -- move-in days are always the hardest, and the stupidity of "gifted" young kids is not to be underestimated. Many of these kids own laptops they don't know how to use and don't deserve (read: would be put to much better use in my hands). Urgh, waiting 'til August for the Merom (Core 2 Duo for laptops) processors to come out is going to be annoying...

Class is pretty easy. I thought it might be tough to cram a quarter's worth of physics into 13 days, but the current pace is already pretty slow. Definitely not helping my attendance problem.

Cooking is fun! I've been doing a lot more cooking over the summer since there's a bit more time and 'cause the dining hall food annoys me. Hopefully I'll still have time to cook once in a while during the school year.

I require air conditioning! The dorms don't have air conditioning in the rooms, so I've been sweating nonstop as soon as I step out of the shower. My window fan that displays temperature says "Hi", which means it went over double digits and blew it up. When I get in bed, the bed is warm. Disgusting (for the summertime). I tried playing Christmas music earlier to cool me down. Misfire. I miss winter. I hate this heat. I hate Christmas music that stays in a major key. I want some harmonic diversity! I want some rain! Let it rain! Let it pour! Hallelujah!

It's been quite a while since I've updated. It just feels like I'm so busy I don't have time to chronicle what's been going on. Schoolwork is keeping me up late, especially last week and this week. I just finished writing a progress report for my engineering design class. Building the prototype is going to eat up a lot of time over the next two weeks. Various problem sets due this week, a graphics portfolio for engineering design, music theory homework, and lots of practicing because unlike last week, I can't put it off anymore.

So, this Friday from 12:15PM to 13:00PM, y'all should turn on your radios to FM 98.7 (WFMT) and listen to me and the rest of Dr. Giles' studio busting out our piano moves live on the radio. I'm playing Rachmaninov's Etude-Tableaux Op. 39 No. 3 in F# minor. I have to practice a lot, though, 'cause I can't just go and screw around live on the radio, can I?

Other cool music news: This Thursday, Philharmonia is performing at Pick-Staiger. We're playing Borodin's "On the Steppes of Central Asia", Prokofiev's 1st Violin Concerto, and Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony. Also, Wednesday, May 31, I'm performing in a movie music concert. We're playing music from Hook, Jurassic Park, Band of Brothers, and Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone. I'm playing piano/celeste (so you'll definitely hear me playing that unmistakable HP theme) and it'll be a lot of fun, except I'll also have to practice.

Future Plans: This summer, I'm staying at Northwestern for a good amount of time. I got a job with CTD (Northwestern for Kiddies) as a Tech/AV Assistant helping people set up their computers and stuff. I get room and board, and my hours are in the evening, which allows me to take classes at NU as well. I'm taking Physics 135-2, 135-3, and Basic Drawing (Art 125-0). I'm excited to take my first drawing class -- I've always liked drawing but never got around to taking an actual art class during high school. During the next school year, I got a job as a ResCon (helping people with their computers) as well as a job as a research assistant to Professor Randy Freeman in the ECE department. I'm going to be helping him with his simulations of multi-agent networks (a.k.a. swarm behavior). It sounds really cool and I'm uber-excited about this summer and the coming year.

It really sounds like I'm an ECE/Piano major, doesn't it? I'm actually Mechanical Engineering and Piano, but the stuff I'm picking up all seems to be ECE-related. Oh well. Uhm, the sun just rose, so I'm heading off to bed before those birds get too loud.
